Type 1:

Supplemental Plans that offer additional expense coverage for what Part A and Part B of Medicare plans doesn’t cover in full.

There are 10 standardized plans of this sort, ranging from Plan A to Plan N, that cover costs such as coinsurance, deductibles & copays.

Each plan is different and offers a unique combination of coverage and deductibles.

  • You must have Medicare Part A and B.

  • Guaranteed issue open enrollment for seniors age 65 or older - 6 months from Part B effective date.

  • Special circumstances - typically 63 days after loss of coverage.

  • Rating, methodology, and underwriting vary by state.

Type 2:

Advantage Plans that offer an alternative way to get Medicare Part A and Part B coverage through private insurance companies.

These plans often offer coverage on things that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as transportation to medical visits, over-the-counter drugs, fitness programs, dental, hearing, and vision services.

They are customized to provide benefits to treat specific conditions.

However, they do not cover copay for facility stays, physician visits, etc.
